Buckeye Gains Meet and Confer
By Bryan Jeffries, PFFA Executive VP, President Local 2260
Brothers and Sisters,
It is with utmost pride to report that last night (September 16, 2008) the Buckeye Town Council voted to approve Meet and Confer for Town employees. Some of you may recall that this effort began in the fall of 2007 and was brought before the Council and former Mayor this past March. In a devastating blow, one council member and the former Mayor voted against our proposal, after explicit commitments of support causing it to fail 4 o 3. While this was a significant blow to the Buckeye Local, they did not give up. With amazing tenacity, the Buckeye team continued to work hard on achieving their goals. Perseverance paid off and despite some resistance from the City Manager and Human Resources staff as well as their anti-union Attorney, last night the new Mayor and council voted unanimously in favor of
the right for Town employees to negotiate for their wages, hours and working conditions. Special kudos are in order for former President, Chad Gilliam and current President, Mike Russell for their hard work and leadership. We also owe special thanks to IAFF member and Buckeye councilman Robert Garza for his steadfast leadership as well as councilman Dave Rioux for his strong support. This was a unique project for all of us and I want to thank all Buckeye Fire Fighters for your support and hospitality during my many visits to the Town, as we worked together to bring this to fruition.
